Daebie Kim (b.1994, South Korea) is an artist working primarily in painting, currently based in London. Her practice has developed through a formal dialogue with art history and image-making across cultures, approaching the two-dimensional surface as a site where inherited systems of meaning, social constructs, or familiar images can be punctured, withheld, or re-formed.
Central to her practice is the recurring form of central voids, which disrupt conventional figure–ground relationships and open moments of narrative ambiguity within the pictorial surface. In her recent works, the paintings sit with what resists naming, instead of representing specific subjects. She explores the possibility of portraits that exceed established identities and categories, what she calls "portraits of being," rendering bodies and forms in states of constant transformation. Imagining diverse manifestations of existence through many pictorial methodologies, she investigates themes of empty existence, transformation, and rebirth. Kim seeks to capture the fluid essence of transpersonality and transtemporal being, presenting a pictorial space where the constraints of identity and time dissolve into a singular, resonant encounter.
She holds a dual degree in Fine Arts and Art History from UCLA and is currently completing her MFA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her work has been exhibited internationally across South Korea, Hong Kong, Dubai, Spain, London, and the United States.
