Daebie Kim
(b. 1994) is a South Korea–born artist working primarily in
painting, drawing, and ceramics, based currently between London and Seoul. Her
practice has developed through a formal dialogue with art history and
image-making across cultures, approaching the two-dimensional surface
as a site where familiar systems of meaning, social constructs, or images
can be punctured, withheld, or re-formed.
Central to her practice is the recurring form of central voids, which disrupt conventional figure–ground relationships and open moments of narrative ambiguity within the pictorial surface. Rather than representing specific subjects, her works stage encounters with states of unknowing.
She holds a dual bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts and Art History from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and is currently in the first year of her MFA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her work has been presented in solo exhibitions at POST and Humorgarmgot (Seoul, S. Korea) and Mythtake Museum (Gapyeong, S. Korea), as well as in group exhibitions including Wooson Gallery (Seoul), Volery Gallery (Dubai) and The Shophouse (Hong Kong). In 2020, she participated in the PINEA-LINEA DE COSTA artist residency in Rota, Spain.
